Re-creation of Dexter

Hi all,

This is my first cut of my version of the title sequence of Dexter.  I found the original footage fascinating because of the creepy juxtaposition of ordinary things.

This is the link for the original version:

The video is password protected because of the copyright infringements (I ripped the DEXTER title, the spreading blood, and the theme song is by The Dark Passengers).

If anyone would like help editing or with the editing programs, I would be happy to help.

  1. I think the image looks pretty good, perhaps a tad underexposed here and there but certainly nothing problematic. The edit seems precise. However, since you skipped a couple of shots the flow of the music track with the edit feels off at times. In other words, you have to hold on images longer than necessary to compensate for this. I would say try a cut that isn't precisely true to the original sequence. You can cut down the music track somehow and tighten the edit accordingly. This may help the ending, as well.

I think the knife in the egg yolk jump cut series could be refined, as well. Later in the semester we can re-look at this and try to figure out how it was cut in the show. And lastly I think adding those additional sound effects (hand on face, ham on pan, shoe laces, etc.) will really strengthen everything.

Overall I'm happy with the work your crew is doing and am looking forward to seeing Dan and Molly's cuts up on the blog.

    1. I did limit myself by trying to be very precise on this edit. On my second cut of this I will work on the artistry and add the sound effects (that I know you are dying for).

  2. In my opinion, that was really well done. I love the lighting how the lighting came out in those tight places. Also very good editing, the pace moved nicely with the soundtrack. Looking forward to seeing your next project!

  3. In one word, dang. I'm really impressed at how well you established the continuity between your own work, and the original sequence. Every little portion of the sequence isn't there, but in my opinion that doesn't take away at all from what you've done. Your attention to detail shows in the lighting, framing, and overall composition of what you have. I'm definitely a fan.
